It's orgins are from Hebrew folklore where a sculpture made a human out of clay and it came to life. A golem was later taken into the world of fantasy where clay was not the only foundation to making a golem. Golems in the world D&D have been made from materials such as metals, earthen material(dirt, clay, wood, etc), jewels/gems, and human remains, Yet there are no bound rules to what a golem may or may not be created from. Golems are given life from a magic being to help aid them with a quest or to just protect.
